Most small business websites look decent. But looking decent and actually converting visitors into paying customers are two completely different things. If your website is getting traffic but your phone isn't ringing, one or more of the five problems below is almost certainly the reason.
You Don't Have a Clear Call to Action
Every page on your website should answer one question the visitor is silently asking: "What do I do next?" Most small business sites bury their contact information in the footer, list a phone number in 10-point font somewhere on the About page, and hope visitors will figure it out themselves.
They won't. People are busy, distracted, and making decisions in seconds. If the next step isn't immediately obvious, they'll leave.
Your primary call to action — whether that's "Call Now," "Get a Free Quote," or "Book an Appointment" — needs to appear in three places at minimum: your top navigation bar, your hero section (the first thing visible on the page), and at the bottom of every service page. It should be impossible to miss on any device.
Your Page Loads Too Slowly
Google research shows that 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Think about that — more than half your potential customers are leaving before they've seen a single word you've written.
Slow websites are usually caused by uncompressed images (the most common culprit), too many unnecessary plugins or scripts, and cheap shared hosting where your site is crammed onto a server with thousands of others.
Test your site right now at pagespeed.web.dev — it's free, takes 30 seconds, and will tell you exactly what's slowing you down and how to fix it. Aim for a score above 80 on mobile.
You're Not Showing Up on Google
If your website has no SEO work done on it — no keyword research, no optimized title tags, no Google Business Profile — Google simply doesn't know enough about your business to show you to potential customers.
Local search in particular requires specific signals. When someone types "flooring company near me" or "web designer Grand Rapids," Google is looking for clear evidence that your business serves that area and provides that service. If your website doesn't make this explicit, you won't appear.
At minimum: make sure every page has a unique title that includes your service and city. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Publish at least one piece of content per month that targets a search term your customers actually use.
Your Website Isn't Built for Mobile
Over 60% of all web traffic comes from smartphones. If your site forces mobile visitors to pinch and zoom, loads a desktop-sized layout on a phone screen, or has buttons too small to tap accurately — those visitors are gone, and they're not coming back.
Do this test right now: pull out your phone and visit your own website. Can you read everything clearly without zooming? Can you tap every button without frustration? Is your phone number a tap-to-call link? If the answer to any of these is no, you're bleeding leads every single day.
There's No Reason for Visitors to Trust You
When someone lands on your website, they don't know you. They're making a decision about whether to trust you with their money and their time. Without clear trust signals, most people will default to choosing someone else — usually a competitor with more visible credibility.
Trust builders that actually work: real photos of you or your team (not generic stock photos of strangers), Google reviews displayed prominently on your homepage, a clear service area so people know you actually serve their location, and an About page that explains the real story behind your business. Generic doesn't build trust. Specific and real does.
The bottom line: Your website should be working as your best salesperson — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, while you focus on running your business. If it's not bringing in consistent leads, something above needs to change.
At Majesty Web Design, every site we build is engineered around these exact principles — fast loading, mobile-first, with clear calls to action and genuine trust signals built in from day one.
